“Love travels via lines in transmission, in threads and thoughts, in communication. Across wires and waves between thumbs on keypads and satellites in the stars. Our loves are written in lines, often conveyed by electricity, silicon and precious metals.”

Kelly Wallwork

Over the week of Valentine’s Day, 12–18 February, Vessels of Love 2024 presents the voices and visions of seven poets from Sydney and regional NSW, to celebrate poetry’s enduring role to overcome love’s distance and disconnection.

This year’s iteration of VOL features Albert Lin, Ali Whitelock, Gillian Swain, Luke Patterson, Magdalena Ball, Paris Rosemont and Richard James Allen.

Presented by Poetry Sydney, curated by The Salons, and inspired by Wallwork’s vision of love in transmission, we lean into the longing to harness the poetics of love, and tune into the possibilities of ready-at-hand modes of transmission.

Thinking airwaves and waterways, we draw from the magical simplicity and accessibility of the letter, the photograph, the telephone, the radio, and the internet, channelling each as love’s instrument for poetic confession, connection and preservation.

The programme

Poetry films

Over the seven days of VOL 2024, seven short poetry films featuring the work of our seven different poets will be published as unique digital transmissions of love. Find them online from 12 February, on Instagram, YouTube and right here.

Poetry art cards

A limited set of seven poetry art cards to commemorate VOL 2024. Each card presents an excerpt of poetry with its own digitally-rendered ‘love in transmission’ image, based on an audio visualisation of the poet’s voice. Available for purchase at Gleebooks Glebe from 12-18 February.

Poem Phone

Inspired by John Giorno’s 1968 Dial-a-Poem project, come seek out an old rotary phone, hidden in the bookstacks of Gleebooks Glebe. Dial a number and hear a love poem, read by the poet.
